Many many experienced domainers will categorically tell you that most of their initial purchases in the first year of their initiation into the domain world, were thrown away when it came to renewal.
Why?
Because domain name buying is a complex field. And even more so now, given that any "easy" money has long since been made... but, there are nuggets out there, you just need to know your stuff.
So, when first entering the domain name buying game, buy an absolute max of 1 domain a week. That way when you know more about the industry you won't be throwing away loads of domains.... there are more than a few people that have maxed out their credit cards... only to realize that they were substandard names in hindsight.
Goodluck, keep your eyes open, as this market changes fast.

Many folks just getting into the domain world are under the impression of "easy money" to be made, well as UFO stated, those days, for the most part have come and gone. Sure there are niche markets opening up each day, those being new technologies and advancements, registering domains befitting these new techs and advancements can and do produce notable sales of related domains.
Thing is, you need to be cutting edge, by the time you read, watch or actually use the new tech, or gadget, related "keyword" type domains have long been registered. You need to be way out front, and on top of the latest to gain a cut of this new product or service to "score"
Then there are the longer, two and three word combination generic type domains, the "big players" may have overlooked, but I am seeing several "big players" take a "keyword" domain and adding every concievable second and even third word with the "base keyword" and registering these by the thousands, so even this method is rapidly becoming tough to get a secondary generic domain that might offer some natural type in traffic. And for the most part, is the reason these multi word domains are registered, the pay per click they may generate from the park pages, that have relevant to the domain links by sponsered businesses in the domains relatated industry. These businesses bid against each other for top placement in a pay per click environment and pay for clicks on those links, you gain a percentage of that bid rate from your chosen domain parking service.
These generic "combo word domains" do resell on the secondary domain market, but for the most part at lower prices, domains of this nature are going for the p.p.c. (pay per click) income.
So to have a portfolio of this style domain's you need to be selective in your registrations, try to find the niche, try to find good related word combinations, and try to find domains that fit what a person would actually search for. Example, HeavyDutyTruckBatteries.com, I am sure the bid rate for this domain is of decent amount and I am sure there are plenty of people who would search this exact phrase. Of course peopple will usually seperate the words in the search bar, some don't. Thing is this phrase typed in either way will place well in the search engine results page, and your links on your park page will be relevant, pay good and thus have a higher click through rate.
So if your going to register domains as a secondary income, this is one way to go. Not nessecarily the best, simply because this method usually requires many domains to produce a significant income. But as stated before, there are nuggets out there, even these multi word domains at say .40 a click(example, all bid rates vary) can and do make revenue over the cost of renewal fees. Register a few of these that have been overlooked and your earning a modest side income, the more you add, the more you make. Of course the ratio of winner to loser domains is the game.
It is possible to make income off generic multi word domains, one click at a time.
